Watch this space as we will bring you news of the wonderful events and activities coming soon as part of the project….
If you have any suggestions or ideas for maritime themed events or would like to work with us to deliver an event within the community or to your group please do get in touch.
Tuesday 22 August –
We will be joined by Crafting History woodcarving artist Jill Brewster and she works live in our courtyard to create some boat inspired pieces. Jill will be working with the types of wood that were used by local boat builders in Great Yarmouth when building fishing boats like the Coronation, Grace and Shipmates. She will be carving name plaques for our boats amongst other exciting pieces.
Saturday 10th – Sunday 11th September –
An exciting weekend as we celebrate both Maritime Festival and Heritage Open Days.
This year will be present at both the Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival on South Quay and Time & Tide museum will be opening it’s doors for the first time as part of HOD’s weekend (that’s right free admission on Saturday & Sunday – spread the word!).
Time & Tide will be located inside the Heritage Hub all weekend. Pop along to the heritage hub to talk to the town’s heritage tour guides about all things in Great Yarmouth’s past. Take a look at the ‘A Postcard From Len’ display and match pictures from today and yesteryear. Time & Tide staff will be delivering craft activities for the kids and showcasing some of the museum’s fantastic maritime collections.
We’d like to know what Great Yarmouth means to you, so please do come and share your memories with us!
Heritage Open Days:
Enjoy free admission to the museum on Saturday and Sunday to see for yourself what a difference the vital conservation work funded the Esmee Fairbairn Collection Fund has done for our 3 fishing vessels.
The three boats in our courtyard have recently undergone some vital conservation work and you can now view them in their restored condition as never before. We will be lifting the covers on our shrimper – the Coronation YH671 for visitors to take a peek inside the vessel that once worked off the shore of Great Yarmouth collecting up to 40 gallons of shrimp on a good day’s catch. Our 2 beach skiffs will also be on show in their newly restored condition for visitor to learn more about the stories of ‘Grace’ and ‘Shipmates’ and their days at sea as herring fishing boats.
Shopping: 1940’s Style
Not any old shop. Visit our historic row and step inside our recreated 1940’s store to experience life during the days of rationing. No self-service checkouts or scanners but the shelves are lined with delights and products from the past as we transport you back to how shopping used to be 70 years ago.
